Welcome back to yet ANOTHER addition to the beloved serving board series! If you haven’t been keeping up with the series and how/why we started it, check out the previous blog posts below:
Long story long, we started out by making 100 serving boards to test our processes when it came to purchasing lumber, milling, cutting to size, sanding, and finishing. We wanted to figure out where our sticking points would be and fix them in our checklists before we were too busy to stop and do it. Along that journey we also found some other areas that needed to be addressed. Go check out the whole series below!

So why did we need to add yet another video to this series, you ask?! Well…the boards we made in the first video were nice and all, but some of them were a little…well….odd. We decided to make each one unique and completely unlike the one we were going to run through the bandsaw next. It was a great exercise in production, but we could definitely make them look a little more appealing. At first we resisted using a template because we WANTED each board to be 100% unique, but we’ve now decided that these serving boards will be more of an “add-on” or “gift” product. Our cutting boards will now be the main product that we’re looking to sell in bulk to realtors.
So what does this mean for the serving boards?
It means producing fewer design options that can be easily created using templates. It also needs to be a process that can be easily written up in a checklist for a future employee to understand quickly and clearly. No need to make these too complicated when the cutting boards will be doing most of the leg-work.
HOWEVER, we will still build the serving boards within the same sizing restraints as our cutting board packaging. No need to induce yet another packaging cost for a product that’s essentially the same thing as a cutting board.
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY!! The unboxing experience we desire to have for our cuttings boards (that “wow factor” when you first open the lid of the box) will be the same for the serving boards as well.
Providing the same quality of experience with an add-on product as we do for our main line of products will trigger the question in peoples’ minds – “If this is what my free/discounted/add-on serving board is like….what will my $5,000 kitchen table be like?!?” If you’re charging prices like that, your quality better reflect it.
So what designs ended up making the cut for the new templates?
We went with two outward facing handle designs (both pretty traditional looking) and one with just a hole in the upper right corner (our more modern looking design). Obviously we wanted them to be easy to build – but we also wanted them to be in line with current trends.
With all of this testing and practicing we’ve been doing on these boards, you’d think we’d be done after this one! Nope!!
