Growth is hard.

Updated: Oct 16, 2020

We learned this the difficult way as we finished up creating our new studio. You’re probably thinking…what can POSSIBLY be so difficult about decorating a stupid home office?! Well…let’s start where our struggles began…

If you want to see how we conquered our demons in video form, check out the video below!

Check out the video we made on creating our first studio space!

We started our studio creation journey by making a huge two-person desk that would allow both Davis and I to work and collaborate easily in the same spot. If you haven’t read that blog post, check it out! The desk turned out amazing and we were SO excited to continue with the rest of our studio decorations!

We built this solid ash and poplar desk for our office.

We love how the desk looks in our space. It has a nice modern, simple feel!

We put up some sound panels on 3 of the 4 walls just to get better audio quality for when we *eventually* start a podcast *wink wink* *hint hint*. After that it was time to DRASTICALLY improve the lighting in that room! We added a couple adjustable LED lamps and a big studio light…it made a WORLD of difference!! We plan to do a lot of video recording in this room…so we want our footage to be on point. If you want to check out both of those lighting options, the links are below!

After all of the practical purchases were unboxed and set up, we started on the FUN part!! The decorations! We want our viewers and anyone who sees this studio to understand who we are as Jennie and Davis and just “get” what we’re all about. We thought about some ways to do this…and what we landed on (since we only had one wall to work with after the lighting and sound paneling was complete) was a picture frame collage! It’s better known as a “frame wall” on Pinterest or Instagram. Basically we had 8 frames that we wanted to fill with pictures, words, colors, things, etc that would display what we’re all about! We want people who have never watched our content before to just “get” us.

You may be wondering what we want them to just “get”. What information do we want people to walk away with upon seeing our studio for the first time? The answer: Growth mindset.

“But you’re running a woodworking business…what the heck does that have to do with Growth Mindset?!?!?”

Well…everything…

Starting a business is hard. You fail a lot. You make mistakes. You’re FAR from perfect during the first year or two (or three or four…). Sometimes you start to get frustrated with not being perfect right out of the gate. It starts to seem unfair when your output is far less than your input in the beginning. So what do you even do about that?!

You Grow. You stop making the same mistake twice. You use the things that suck (inexperience, fear, frustration) to your advantage!!

Inexperience makes you an open-minded business person willing to take risks and try new things. Facing fears rather than running from them makes you stronger than the business owner down the street. Frustration forces you solve your problems early on so they don’t come back to bite you years later.

Growth Mindset is what the heads of the world’s largest and most successful industries are teaching. And the best part? This shift in mindset doesn’t just mean a successful business…it means a fulfilling life.

But how the heck do we convey that in 8 picture frames?! We had no clue…we spent hours trying…and got so frustrated…the perfect images and words didn’t seem to exist.

And then it hit us…

How could we NOT see it?! We were being such hypocrites!! Here we were wanting to display Growth Mindset throughout our studio – a concept that literally means continual learning. It means sucking at the beginning…but refusing to stay that way.

We don’t need the perfect studio that sums up who we are as people and a business on the first try. That’s not growth. That’s trying to skip steps. We need a studio that shows who we are now…and who we refuse to remain as. We need to show people that, yeah, we’re not great at this whole business and content thing yet…but we will be.

This is the frame wall we created for our recording studio.

Not all 8 frames are on the wall quite yet, but these are the 4 we decided on!

These are the picture frames for our recording studio.

For where we are right now…we’re happy with our little frame wall.

And that’s how we TRULY convey a growth mindset to our viewers.

Growth Mindset to us is understanding that not every seed you plant in life will sprout…so you just need to keep planting…and REFUSING to stop.
